The term "cardiomyopathies" is an umbrella term that encompasses a large and heterogeneous group of cardiac dysfunctions affecting the myocardium,often of
genetic origin or secondary to other medical conditions. There are different typesof cardiomyopathies, capableof altering the structure and function oftheheart
muscle making it thicker, stifferor more dilated than normal. This results in possible serious consequences for the cardiovascular function itself: heart failure,
arrhythmiasor cardiac arrest can be possible consequencesof a cardiomyopathy. In many cases, cardiomyopathies arise as a result of viral infectionsor, as mentioned
above, result from other morbid conditions (for example, metabolic disordersor complex syndromes), from congenital and non-congenital heart defects (for example,
rhythm disturbances).heart disease), severenutritional decienciesor theuseof certain medications. In other cases,however, the etiology isunknown. Among the
various typesof cardiomyopathies, the main aficting the adult population are: hypertrophic, dilated and restrictive cardiomyopathy. The rst is characterized by
pathological thickeningofthe wallsofthe left ventricle; often genetic etiology,has a rather low incidence, but can have serious consequences. In dilated
cardiomyopathy, the ventricular cavitiesundergo an enlargement which is associated with a decreased myocardial contraction force. It can be a consequenceof
chronic alcohol and drug abuse. The last form of cardiomyopathy, the restrictiveone, consists in a stiffeningofthe myocardium, which will not allow a physiological
correct contraction. This form isoften related to systemic disorders such as amyloidosis,hemochromatosisor sarcoidosis. Finally, a particular typeof
cardiomyopathy, called "Arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia", involves the replacement, in the right ventricle,ofthenormal myocardial tissue with adipose
or bro-adipose tissue. Arrhythmia is the main consequenceofthis typeof disorder, at the baseof which there are genetic alterations concerning the cellular
